National conference to feature first results from landmark First Nations survey

The First Nations Information Governance Centre (FNIGC) is pleased to announce a three-day conference in November 2015 that will feature the release of initial, key findings from the First Nations Regional Early Childhood, Education and Employment Survey (FNREEES) along with workshops, guest speakers, and First Nations entertainers.

The FNREEES National Data Release Conferencewill take place on November 17–19, 2015 at the Westin Ottawa Hotel in downtown Ottawa. Organized under the theme “Now is the Time: Our Data, Our Stories, Our Future” the conference will gather First Nations experts, First Nations community leaders and planners , academics, government representatives and stakeholders together for three days of workshops, discussion groups, and skill-building sessions.

Facilitated by the ever popular Stan Wesley, each day will feature plenary speakers such as Kendall Netmaker (First Nations youth entrepreneur and Indspire Award recipient) along with presentations and workshops related to First Nations early childhood development, education, and employment – the three topics at the core of the FNREEES. The conference will also include an evening celebration that will feature special guests Don Kelly, Juno-nominee Vern Cheechoo, musician Carmen Jones, and more.

Launched in 2013, the FNREEES is a historic, one-of-a-kind survey that will provide an unprecedented perspective of life in First Nations communities and help fill the data gap that exists in these critical areas. The survey was conducted in nearly 250 First Nations communities in 10 provinces and two territories between 2013 and 2015, with more than 21,000 First Nations children, youth and adults, taking part.
