Take the Course

Welcome to The Fundamentals of OCAP®

The First Nations Information Governance Centre (FNIGC) is pleased to offer The Fundamentals of OCAP®, an online training course developed in partnership with Algonquin College Corporate Training.

This self-guided course takes learners through seven modules that are designed to introduce the fundamental concepts of OCAP®, information governance, and First Nations data sovereignty.

Through the use of historical and contemporary examples learners will discover: why OCAP® is needed, how it can be applied in real life, the barriers to–and the levers for–the implementation of OCAP®, and the future of OCAP®.

Each module takes approximately 40 minutes to complete. Learners will be quizzed during each module, at the completion of each module, and at the conclusion of the course. Learners must get a score of 80% or higher on the final knowledge test to successfully complete the course.

A statement of achievement will be sent to all learners who successfully complete their course.

What people are saying about the course

The Fundamentals of OCAP® online training course helped me to understand how First Nations rights and jurisdiction apply to information and research. First Nation people are gatherers and keepers of Indigenous knowledge systems, and First Nations jurisdiction includes ownership over data about these systems. This course helped me to understand the importance of access, control, and possession of these data, as well as the meaning of First Nations data sovereignty and data governance. After completing this training, I was better able to support the development of governance and information management systems in Indigenous communities, and I am better able to ensure that the research I am involved in complies with OCAP® principles.

– Dana Hickey, Graduate Student

I highly recommend the online course The Fundamentals of OCAP®, particularly for anyone (thinking of doing any research involving First Nations people. I took the course because I am interested in decolonizing curriculum and conducting research on how to do so effectively. Though I have done independent reading on the topic, this course solidified information I have already come across ad also shed light on a number of issues I had not even thought about. It is important for researchers to know that the Tri-Council Policy statement on conducting ethical research involving humans is not exhaustive, and the examples of past research covered in the course that did not follow OCAP® principles make it so clear why OCAP® principles need to be followed.
