Make A Data Request

FNIGC offers data access to individuals for purposes of academic research, policy development, advocacy, or program planning and evaluation on a pay-per-use basis. The data cannot be used for commercial purposes.

Request for this service can be made through our Online Request Tool or on-site at FNIGC’s Ottawa office. Please note: all data produced are aggregated nationally and weighted to represent First Nations communities across Canada.

Online Request Tool

If you wish to make a request for data housed at FNIGC’s Ottawa office, whether you are looking for unpublished tables, access to the First Nations Data Centre (FNDC), or requesting research services, you must complete an application form.

To fill out an application form, you must first register with the FNDC Requests Web Tool. Once your request has been completed and submitted, FNDC staff along with the Data Access Advisory Working Group will conduct a review. The signing of a data sharing agreement and completion of The Fundamentals of OCAP® course will be required prior to data access.

Explore Available Data

By providing  access to FNIGC data, the First Nations Data Centre (FNDC) promotes the advancement of First Nations health and wellness by facilitating meaningful research that can truly benefit First Nations people.

The FNDC achieves this while protecting the confidentiality of First Nations respondents and communities at all times. The data centre offers five levels of data access, all of which requires the submission of a proposal and a signed contract.

There are five types of data access:

  • FNIGC Data Online
  • General Purpose Custom Tables
  • Special Purpose Custom Tables
  • Record-level Data at the On-site Research Data Centre
  • FNIGC Collaborative Research Services

On-site Access

FNIGC operates the On-site Data Centre out of its Ottawa office at 180 Elgin Street, Suite 1200. Here, researchers can access de-identified, record-level data for purposes of testing hypotheses and statistical modeling. This type of data access is only permitted for research questions that cannot be addressed with data tables alone. A data access contract must be signed prior to entering the On-site Data Centre.

The On-site Data Centre request form can be completed online. If you wish to review the application questions, you can find them here.
